As the entertainment world continues to take a break from live events, artists are always finding innovative ways to connect with fans, and Kehlani is no exception. The Oakland-born singer will perform her second studio album, It was good until it wasn’t, live in full for the first time since its release in May 2020 in a pair of concerts that will take place on NoCap, a virtual concert platform with unlimited âseatingâ space. Like Kehlani recently tweeted of Shows from May 10 to 11, entitled It was alive until it wasn’t “[T]there is no cap on tickets. [M]This means that there is no âsaleâ. “
Kehlani has partnered with a vegan makeup line Lime crime to get her look together for performances, in concert with the brand new Never Blend In Campaign. NYLON caught up with Kehlani ahead of her gig to talk more about the partnership and why she’s excited about her return to dancing, which you can read in full below.
Why did you decide to partner with Lime Crime?
They approached with the idea. I thought it was great because I love their products. Love that they’re vegan and cruelty-free. I think it’s really great.
Do you generally use vegan products?
Here and there, depending on what it is for; for my body, I tend to use vegan products. I don’t find that for my skin type it often works well for me but when it comes to makeup i think cleansing is great but when it comes to skin care i hate to say it but chemicals work better for me so I’ll be honest.
What’s your daily beauty routine these days?
With a child, it’s interesting. I feel like my skin care routine is almost spaced out because it just depends on how much time I have. When it comes to beauty, I don’t really wear makeup at all unless I really have to go somewhere. I don’t have a daily beauty routine, but there are many steps in my skin care routine. I did a video recently explaining my skin care routine. It has been great to see the feedback from people who have tried similar things and also had good results.
When it comes to makeup, how do you go about creating a look?[The artists] all know more or less that I keep it simpler. I’ll let them have fun, if they have any suggestions to try to change that. I think as a Taurus I can say, ‘I’m comfortable with that’ and then we do what I’m comfortable with, but they’re really good at saying, ‘Let’s try this, let’s do. this â, and I’m pretty open-minded.
Since this is your first time playing your album live, what are you most excited to see for your fans?
I’m really excited that I’m dancing again because people haven’t seen this in years from me. That’s exciting. I feel like it’s like a comeback in a very specific way. I have been cold for a long time, especially since I had a child.
What inspired the return to dance?
I do not know. It was just time. I missed it. My body missed it. The music sounded right. It took a long time to regain my body strength to dance in the first place, especially like dancing and singing. It was a little difficult, but it was awesome.
What are you doing to make sure your mental health is taken care of?
I really make sure that I am really there every day. I think you can get caught up in a lot of emotions when you think about the future, you dwell on the past, and when you’re just super present, you find every reason to enjoy every little moment. So I really try to be here, because there’s usually something to smile about here when you don’t think too much about another time.
