Making its market debut later this year, MONO is a skin care brand that offers a line of microbiome-friendly skin care tablets that are activated by dissolving them in water at room temperature.
âIt means you can buy the bottle once. So basically we’re going to stop using single-use plastic in the beauty industry â, said founder Laurie Mias.
Mias developed the brand while working in the hospitality industry, where single-use plastic and waste is rampant.
âI made it my mission at one point to find the perfect skin care brand that would focus on aging with scientifically proven results while having a positive impact on the environment⦠I couldn’t find anything that ticked all the boxes, so I figured there was room for such a thing, and decided to take matters into my own hands.
Developing an effective skincare brand with Mias’ ambitious green goals was no easy task for the start-up. On the one hand, it was difficult to find the right partners to work with.
âI came across a company that had developed a paper bottle⦠for a brand of beer. And I thought I was really lucky and that’s it, I found the company I want to work with that sounds great and exactly what I was looking for. But when I contacted them they said they couldn’t work with me because they had an exclusive partnership with one of the greats.
She added that while she was delighted that more companies were working on such developments towards sustainable and circular goals, she hoped that the beauty industry could become more inclusive in the future so that start-ups did not do not have to face a similar frustration.
Besides its own brand, the company also plans to work with other entities, such as hotel chains, to help develop their own cosmetic tablets through white label services.
“I am very happy to know that we can share this innovation and that we can inspire all industries even to evolve into this new format in one way or another” Mias said.
