Summer is synonymous with sun and salt water⦠but did you know that it is also the season for hydration?
One of the most underrated wellness habits we can practice is one of the simplest. It starts with the water⦠but it doesn’t mean going to the beach, pool or medical spa. It’s simply … moisturizing!
Staying well hydrated is essential throughout the year, but especially important during the summer months when the weather gets warmer, you sweat more, and you are more active.
Good hydration brings us so many health benefits.
Drinking water does a lot of wonderful things for our bodies. He:
Regulates body temperature
Lubricates the joints
Provides nutrients to cells
Maintains proper functioning of organs
Supports our immune system
Dehydration can lead to fatigue, skin problems, headaches, muscle cramps, and low blood pressure, among other symptoms.
Hydration leads to improved energy levels, cognition, mood, digestion and detoxification.
The best summer beauty tip? Drink more water!
Drinking plenty of water is essential, but here are some other ways to optimize your water intake to reap the benefits of increased hydration.
Eat foods rich in water
One of the best things you can do to increase not only your hydration level, but also your nutrient intake, is to eat foods that are rich in water. Think cucumber, celery, zucchini, watermelon, oranges, cantaloupe, lettuce and soups.
Electrolytes include minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. If you exercise or sweat a lot, it may be beneficial to add extra electrolytes to your drinking water. Electrolytes help the water you drink to get into your cells more efficiently.
While staying hydrated is the key to summer wellness, you can’t forget to take the right steps to protect your skin.
According to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), only 14% of men and 30% of women regularly apply sunscreen to their face and other exposed skin before going outside for more than an hour.
Opt for a mineral sunscreen, with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. These mineral sunscreens form a barrier on the surface of your skin that helps reflect UV rays away from the skin. They are ideal for daily and prolonged use as they provide broad spectrum protection against UV and UVB rays. Plus, they’re safe for coral reefs!
Protect your skin by covering it as much as possible using hats, sunglasses and long sleeves whenever possible. You can be sun-conscious and stylish at the same time.
You can protect your skin from the inside too! Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that can help reduce skin damage caused by the sun, as well as improve wrinkles.
As we all take action to improve our health and live well, we inspire others and give them permission to do the same. Living healthy improves our lives on a micro level and also helps us begin to contribute to the betterment of our environment, communities and world in ways we cannot always imagine.
