If Hot Girl Summer and the feeling you had when “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” walked into a dance in college had a baby, it would be Elf Cosmetics Electric Mood 2021 Collection. Launched July 1 on elfcosmetics.com and Target.com, the Electric Mood collection is the result of elf’s annual Beautyscape competition, which went digital in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. While contest winners typically team up to develop a new elf collection, the brand has raised the bar for Beautyscape 5.0 2020 winners, each pairing up with a musician to help design the line. With more than a few shimmering products and punchy metallic gradient packaging, Electric Mood looks exactly what it sounds. And each product will give your high voltage makeup a boost.
Winners Karol Rodriguez, Emily carden, and Michael brooks worked with artists Tove Lo, Tiana Major9, Pitizion and three Girls Inc. alumni to design the 10-piece Electric Mood collection, with products representing each artist’s genre and method of expression. Rock-and-roll vibes drip from Grammy-winning musician Tove Lo’s three-product lineup. There is the Disco Glitz Eyebrow and Eye Kit ($ 18, elf Cosmetics), containing a glitter eye and body paste, a translucent eyebrow pomade and a double-sided, dense bristle applicator brush for the glitter and a spoolie for the pomade. You will also find the Moisturizing Balm ($ 10, Elf Cosmetics), a peach-colored tinted lip balm, and the Glassy skin balm ($ 8, elf Cosmetics), a non-shimmering balm that can be applied anywhere for a natural glow.
The amount of shine provided by the three products of Tiana Major9? Astronomical. the Lip duo ($ 12, Elf Cosmetics) includes a dark brown lip liner, as well as a clear, super shiny lip gloss filled with glitter. Then comes the Feeling Lucky 18 Piece Eyeshadow Palette ($ 16, elf Cosmetics), with rich, lively neutrals and highlights, much like Tiana’s soul and hip hop sound. Of course, completing Tiana’s range is the Illuminating Elixir ($ 14, elf Cosmetics), a priming serum that’s basically a liquid glow in a bottle.
The radiant and warm energy that emanates from the Colombian musician Pitizion is crystal clear in her products. the Shadow pencil duo ($ 12, Elf Cosmetics) includes light brown and dark bronze eyeshadow sticks with a tiny bit of shimmer. the Transparent stick ($ 7, elf Cosmetics) promises a slightly translucent and shiny lipstick that always packs a punch. And the Quad Cream Face Floor ($ 12, Elf Cosmetics) includes a highlighter, two blushes and a bronzer, all with a hint of shimmer and an easily blended consistency. The Electric Mood collection also includes the Electric Mood Brush Set ($ 15, elf Cosmetics), with three makeup brushes and a sponge.
I created two makeup looks for the summer using all the products in the collection, and naturally I have a ton of thoughts.
Electric Mood Look 1: The Review
Elf Cosmetics Feeling Lucky 18 Piece Eyeshadow Palette: 5/5
After applying the elves Camo CC Cream ($ 14, elf Cosmetics) as a base, I used the Feeling Lucky Shadow Palette for my eyeshadow look. Overall the shadows were incredibly easy to blend and I was pleasantly surprised at how soft the matte undertones were, which didn’t apply with smudges. I have noticed that a large amount of pigment also comes with one pass of the shimmering shades, especially if you apply them with your fingers.
elf Cosmetics, Disco Glitz Brow & Eye Kit Brow Pomade: 3.5 / 5
After the eyeliner and the elves Lash It Loud Mascara ($ 6, Elf Cosmetics), I sprayed the brow pomade from the Brow & Eye kit with a bit of setting spray, scraped off the spoolie on top, and applied the product to my eyebrows. There was a hint of ointment residue at first, but a little more brushing blended it well and my eyebrows were set up.
elf Cosmetics De La Soul Cream Quad Face: 5/5
To top off my complexion, I used the bronzer, darker blush and highlighter from Cream Face Quad. Each was just as creamy as the next, offering just the right amount of color, but none were so pigmented that it was difficult to blend. The natural color, shine and bronze only improved throughout the day.
elf Cosmetics Illuminating Elixir: 5/5
I sprinkled a bit of Illuminating Elixir over my cheekbones, which may seem intimidating at first glance. In reality, however, it offered just enough shine to give me sparkling beach baby vibes, instead of the sweaty sewer monster vibes I’m always afraid of. I have found the product to be extremely versatile. I wore it under foundation, with the most subtle shine, and mixed it with moisturizer for a bare face glow.
Elf Cosmetics Moisturizing Balm: 4/5
A few passes of the tinted moisturizer gave me an even peachy tone on my lips and kept them smooth. Naturally I had to reapply it several times throughout the day to keep the pigment at the level I wanted, but never because my lips started to feel dry.
elf Cosmetics Le Lip Duo Lip Gloss: 5/5
I couldn’t resist the glitter if you paid me so I finished the look with the Lip Duo gloss, and I was good to go. I found it to be subtle enough to enhance any lip color, but there was enough sparkle to wear it on its own and enhance your natural lip color if that’s more your speed. Twelve hours of sweltering heat later, my brows were still perfectly defined and puffy, my eyeshadow was brighter than ever, and my complexion survived an embarrassing amount of upper lip sweat. You really like to see it.
Electric Mood Look 2: Review
Elf Cosmetics vitreous skin balm: 5/5
The second look was used for major rock’n’roll of the 90s, and to brag about it, the vibes were impeccable. In addition to the Camo CC Cream, Bronzer and Blush from the Cream Face Quad, I opted for the Glassy Skin Balm. Mixing the product into the highlights of my face with my fingers gave me a natural glow, “I just played a killer on stage, but the stage is actually a dark karaoke room with my friends,” which I loved it and found myself wanting more throughout the day.
Duo of elf Cosmetics shadow pencils: 5/5
I colored some light brown Shadow Crayon on my eyelid and the dark shade on my crease and outer corner. The undertones are very subtle, but the pigment is buildable and melts into the skin like a dream. In the end, that quick and easy defined look took 60 seconds.
elf Cosmetics Disco Glitz Brow & Eye Kit Face & Body Glitter: 5/5
After brushing my eyebrows with the pomade again, I applied the accompanying glitter with the brush end of the spoolie for a ~ sparkly brow ~. As you can see from the photos above, I was a liiiiiit heavy with sequins; know that a little of this goes a long way. Like most glitter, this one will stay where you put it all day.
elf Cosmetics The Lip Duo Lip Liner: 4/5
Next, I filled most of my lips with the Lip Duo lip liner, starting with the outside line and blending inward. The level of pigment in the lip liner is unmatched and it glides on smoothly like butter. It takes a bit of blending if you go for a slight ombre effect like I did, but when blended it’s just * the chef’s kiss *.
elf Cosmetics Sheer Stick: 4/5
I finished the look by layering the red Sheer Stick over the lip liner. The product applies very smooth, so I had to be a little careful to stay exactly in the lines. The end result was a shiny, deep, red-brown look that rivaled that of Courtney Love in the ’90s. I kept the Sheer Stick nearby for refueling throughout the day, but again, each product – including the lip liner – stayed in place for a busy day and three full meals.
The best part about the collection, IMHO, is that it spawned two different looks with completely different vibes, and the possibilities certainly don’t end there. Shop the entire Electric Mood collection from elf Cosmetics below, and all your summer looks are ready:
