Overview

Crowdmark is integrated with the Canvas Learning Management System. This integration provides features such as roster synchronization, team synchronization, and the ability to export grades from Crowdmark into Canvas. To use the integration, you must sign in with your Canvas credentials through your institution’s sign in page on Crowdmark (navigate to https://app.crowdmark.com/sign-in and select your school from the dropdown menu), or by accessing Crowdmark via your school’s LMS. After signing in, you can connect your courses with Crowdmark, then create assessments within those courses.

Crowdmark and Canvas interactions

Integration with Canvas provides many benefits, including synchronization of information to make assessment administration more efficient. Crowdmark and Canvas share the following information:

Importable to Crowdmark

Exportable to Canvas

How do students access Crowdmark?

Students can sign in to Crowdmark via Canvas or with an email and password here: https://app.crowdmark.com/sign-in. Crowdmark sends emails with links for students to access their assignments and grades. Students can also sign in to Crowdmark to access their open assessments at any time.

How do students access their Crowdmark assessments through Canvas?

Depending on the type of integration your school uses, your assessments may not be listed in Canvas automatically. If your assessments are not showing, you can make your Crowdmark assessment available to students in Canvas manually following the instructions below:

  1. Copy the shareable link that appears in your Assessment settings tab

2. Create an Assignment in Canvas

3. Paste the link to your Crowdmark assessment in the Canvas Assignment

4. Schedule the Canvas Assignment to be published to students at the same distribution time you set in Crowdmark

If students attempt to access the assessment in Canvas before it is distributed in Crowdmark, they will receive an error message.

There are different ways to access Crowdmark via a Canvas integration. How you access depends on the type of integration your school is using.

Adding Crowdmark to your Canvas course

If your school has this type of integration, you’ll see the option to create a Crowdmark assessment within your course in Canvas. Once that happens, you’ll be taken to Crowdmark to complete your assessment setup. The student roster will be synced, and the course will be created in the background as you complete the assessment.

Once you have an assessment and course in Crowdmark, you’re able to click Create assessment in Crowdmark, and the assessments you create will be connected automatically to your course in Canvas. Students will be able to access via the Canvas link or via their Crowdmark profiles.

Signing in / connecting an existing account

If you don’t see the option to create a Crowdmark assessment in your Canvas course, you’ll need to sign in with your Canvas credentials through your institution’s sign in page on Crowdmark. If you already have an account on Crowdmark that is not connected to Canvas, this process will connect your account.

      1. Navigate to the Crowdmark sign in page: https://app.crowdmark.com/sign-in and choose your school from the list. If you can’t find your school, contact Crowdmark Support. Your school may not be integrated with Canvas yet.
      2. You will see a list of sign in options for your school’s integrations. Click “Sign in with Canvas” (or your school’s unique name for Canvas).
      3. You will be redirected to your school’s authentication system. Many schools have a Central Authentication System (CAS). Enter your username and password to continue (If you are currently signed in to Canvas you won’t be prompted to sign in).
      4. If this is your first time signing in to Crowdmark with Canvas, you will need to confirm that you’d like to give Crowdmark permission to connect to your Canvas account. Check “Do not ask me again for this application” if you’d like to skip this step next time.
      5. Crowdmark will see if your email address is already associated with a Crowdmark account
        • If you don’t have a Crowdmark account yet, your account will be created automatically
        • If you already have a Crowdmark account, you will be prompted to type in your password for verification and to connect your existing account with Canvas. If you can’t remember your password, you can reset it.
      6. You will be signed in to Crowdmark.

    Course contexts

        • Once your Canvas account is connected to Crowdmark, you will be brought to the My Courses page.

        • To the right of the My Courses title, you will see a logo and text similar to “Canvas @ My School”. This dropdown menu allows you to switch between the Canvas-connected context of Crowdmark and the “standalone” version of Crowdmark.

        • If you already had a standalone account on Crowdmark before connecting to Canvas, you can switch to the “Crowdmark” context to access your existing courses and assessments. Courses and assessments created in the standalone context cannot be connected to Canvas.

Depending on the type of integration your school is using, your student roster may be synced automatically the first time you create an assessment. If you have imported your course manually, you’ll need to import the student roster as well. In either case, keeping the roster up to date is an important step as it ensures that grades will synchronize properly with Canvas’s gradebook later on. When you sync with Canvas, the columns Crowdmark is able to import are:

      • Name (or First name Last name)
      • Email address
      • Student ID
      • Section

If you wish to change or customize the information in the Sections column, you can do so by importing a CSV using the instructions here. Importing a CSV will not affect further sync with Canvas as long as the student email addresses remain unchanged.

If you have imported custom section information using a CSV, make sure to Ignore the Sections column when updating the roster from Canvas.

      Updating the roster

      1. In your course, click Students in the sidebar.
      2. Click the Sync with LMS button in the upper right corner. A modal window will appear.
      3. If the sync was successful you will see the number of students that were found and be asked to map the LMS data to Crowdmark’s data structure. Crowdmark will guess the mapping but it is recommended to double check. Any columns that do not include student Emails, Names, Student ID Numbers or Sections should be ignored.
      4. Once everything is mapped correctly, click the Continue button. You will see a list of students that will be enrolled for confirmation.
      5. Click the Update students button to confirm and enroll the students to your course.
      6. If you have previously customized Sections using a CSV, you can add sections for new students manually by clicking into the individual student, or you can repeat the CSV process.

      Updating the roster

You can update your student list anytime to ensure that it’s consistent with the roster in Canvas.

      1. In your course, click Students in the sidebar.
      2. Click the Sync with LMS button in the upper right corner. A modal window will appear.
      3. If the sync was successful you will see the number of students that were found and a list of students that will be updated and/or disenrolled for confirmation.
      4. Click the Update students button to confirm and update the students to your course.

      Sorting the student list

The student list can be sorted alphabetically (by first name), by email address, student ID or section. When you import your student list it will be sorted alphabetically A-Z by default. Use the arrows in your column headers to sort the student list as needed.

Crowdmark displays a student’s name as First name Last name by default. If you’d like to display surnames first (or sort by surname), reverse the First name and Last name columns when mapping your student data on import.

      Importing team members from Canvas https://crowdmark.com/help/importing-team-members-from-canvas/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:03:02 +0000 /?post_type=help&p=10035

Team members include co-instructors, TAs, graders, anyone who will help with printing, scanning or grading assessments in your course. A description of each role can be found here: What is the difference between team member roles?

      Adding team members

      1. In your course, click Team in the sidebar.
      2. Click the Sync with LMS button in the upper right corner. A modal window will appear.
      3. You will see a list of the synced team members. Under the Role column, select the role each team member should have. To remove a team member, click the x. For more information, see What is the difference between team member roles?
      4. Click the Add team members button. Your team members will be added to the course and will each receive an invitation email.

      Removing team members

From the Team page, a team member can be removed by clicking the x beside their name. This will remove their access to the course and its assessments but all of their past grading and data on Crowdmark will be preserved.

      Adding a printer or uploader

If you need to invite a printer or uploader who does not have access to Canvas (an off-campus print shop, for example), you can invite them by email.

      1. In your course, click Team in the sidebar.
      2. Click the Add by email button in the upper right corner. A modal window will appear.
      3. Type or paste the printer/uploader’s email addresses in the field. Click the Continue button.
      4. Under the Role column, select the Printer-Uploader role.
      5. Click the Add team member button. The printer/uploader will be added to the course and will receive an invitation email.

      Exporting grades from Crowdmark to Canvas’s gradebook https://crowdmark.com/help/exporting-grades-from-crowdmark-to-canvas/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:06:15 +0000 /?post_type=help&p=10040

Scores must be exported from Crowdmark to appear in Canvas’s gradebook. If you make changes to the grades later on, they will need to be exported again to keep the gradebook up to date.

      1. From your assessment Dashboard, click Results in the sidebar. See the section titled “Send and export grades”.

      2. Click the Export grades to Canvas button to export grades.
If there are any issues with the export, you will see a modal window with a summary before you export grades. Crowdmark will not be able to export grades for students who:

        • Were imported from Canvas into Crowdmark but have since been removed from Canvas.
        • Were added manually in Crowdmark and are not part of the Canvas roster.
        • Exist in Canvas but were never added to Crowdmark

To continue, click the Export grades button.
